Project Overview
This established backyard in Don Valley Village contained a mature weeping cherry alongside large juniper and cedar plantings that had become overgrown and visually crowded. Several branches extended into the lawn and toward the garden shed, while the surrounding evergreens had developed uneven and congested growth.
The project included selective trimming of the weeping cherry to reduce low, overextended branches and improve clearance around the lawn and shed. The natural cascading form of the tree was preserved while excessive growth was removed to create a more balanced and manageable canopy.
The surrounding juniper and cedar plantings were also selectively pruned to remove irregular growth, improve separation between plants and restore greater definition throughout the garden bed. One deteriorated evergreen was addressed as part of the cleanup, helping reduce visual clutter and open the surrounding landscape.
All cut branches and debris were collected and removed from the property. The completed work created a cleaner garden line, improved lawn clearance and a more balanced relationship between the weeping cherry, evergreens, shed and surrounding plantings.

Challenges
- The mature weeping cherry had developed long, low-hanging branches extending into the lawn and toward the garden shed. The tree required careful trimming to improve clearance without removing the natural cascading character that gives the tree its distinctive form.
- The surrounding juniper and cedar plantings were dense, mature and closely positioned within an established garden bed. Selective cuts were required to improve shape and separation without exposing excessive bare interior growth.
- The project also involved working around a shed, fence, lawn, hostas and other established garden plants. Cut branches needed to be controlled carefully to prevent damage to the surrounding landscape.
Our Solutions
- The weeping cherry was assessed from multiple angles to identify the branches creating the greatest amount of interference and visual imbalance. Long and low-growing limbs were removed in controlled sections, improving clearance while preserving the tree’s overall weeping shape.
- The juniper and cedar plantings were selectively pruned rather than uniformly sheared. Overextended and irregular growth was reduced while viable green foliage was preserved to maintain the established appearance of the garden.
- Declining and visually disruptive growth was addressed to improve separation between the remaining plants. All branches were placed on protective material during the work before being collected and removed, leaving the lawn and garden beds clean.
