Reshaping of an overgrown 10-foot quince shrub to create a cleaner, rounded form while improving balance, clearance and the overall appearance of the garden.

Project Overview

This mature quince shrub had grown to approximately 10 feet tall and had become uneven, overextended and visually heavy within the garden bed. Selective trimming and reshaping were completed to reduce excess growth and restore a cleaner, more balanced form. The work focused on bringing the height and outer growth under control while maintaining the shrub’s established size and natural fullness. Long shoots and uneven sections were carefully reduced to create a more consistent rounded shape without unnecessarily cutting back into bare interior growth. The quince also had dense, thorny growth throughout the canopy, which required slower, more deliberate handling during trimming and debris removal. Because the shrub was surrounded by established flowers, ground cover and neighbouring plants, the work also required careful positioning to protect the surrounding garden. Once shaping was complete, all cut branches, thorny material, leaves and loose debris were collected and removed from the property. The finished shrub now has a more defined structure, improved balance and a tidy appearance that better complements the surrounding landscape.

Challenges

  • The quince shrub had reached approximately 10 feet in height and developed long, uneven shoots throughout the top and sides. Its overgrown shape had begun to dominate the garden bed and obscure the surrounding fence line and plantings.
  • The dense canopy contained numerous sharp spines and thorns, making both trimming and material handling more difficult. Cut branches had to be controlled carefully to prevent injury and avoid catching on nearby plants.
  • The shrub was also positioned among established flowers, groundcover and neighbouring shrubs, requiring the work to be completed without damaging the surrounding garden.

Our Solutions

  • The shrub was assessed from multiple angles to determine a balanced finished shape. Long shoots and overextended branches were reduced gradually, allowing the height and width to be brought under control while maintaining healthy green foliage across the exterior.
  • The thorny branches were handled in smaller, controlled sections to make trimming and removal safer and to reduce the risk of damaging nearby plants. The top and sides were then carefully shaped into a rounded form that suited the shrub’s mature growth habit and surrounding landscape.
  • Trimming was limited to the amount necessary to improve structure and appearance without exposing excessive bare interior wood. All thorny cut material was carefully collected and removed, leaving the garden bed and lawn clean upon completion.
