Topiary and Hedge Trimming in West Hill
Detailed trimming and reshaping of assorted topiary shrubs and hedges to restore clean lines, balanced forms and a polished front yard appearance.
West Hill, Scarborough
Project Overview
This established front yard in West Hill featured a variety of mature topiary shrubs, hedges and ornamental plantings that required detailed seasonal trimming to maintain their individual shapes and the overall structure of the landscape.
Each planting was assessed and trimmed according to its existing form. Rounded shrubs were carefully refined, upright evergreens were shaped to maintain their tapered profiles and the larger hedges were reduced to create cleaner, more consistent lines throughout the garden.
Because the landscape contained several different plant varieties growing closely together, the work required a detailed approach rather than uniform hedge cutting. Care was taken to preserve each plant’s distinct shape while maintaining balanced spacing between the shrubs, lawn, pathways and surrounding garden features.
All loose clippings and trimmed material were collected and removed from the property. The completed work created a crisp, well-defined front garden with neatly shaped topiary, improved symmetry and a clean transition between the planting beds and lawn.

Challenges
- The front garden contained numerous mature shrubs with different sizes, shapes and growth habits. Each planting needed to be trimmed individually so that its established form was preserved rather than applying the same shape across the entire landscape.
- Several shrubs were positioned close to one another, as well as near the lawn, stone features, landscape lighting and narrow garden pathways. The work required careful equipment placement and controlled trimming to avoid damaging nearby plants or surrounding features.
- Maintaining clean, symmetrical forms also required viewing the shrubs from multiple angles and making gradual adjustments throughout the trimming process.
Our Solutions
- Each shrub and hedge was assessed individually to determine its intended shape and the amount of growth that could be safely removed. Long shoots and uneven sections were reduced gradually to restore definition without cutting excessively into the interior growth.
- Rounded topiary shrubs were shaped evenly from all sides, while taller evergreens were refined to maintain their upright and tapered profiles. The central hedges were trimmed into cleaner, consistent forms that complemented the surrounding garden layout.
- The finished shapes were reviewed from across the lawn and along the pathways to ensure the overall landscape appeared balanced. All clippings and loose material were then removed, leaving the lawn, garden beds and walkways clean.
